How does a great story begin?

long, long ago,
when our aunts and ancestors were alive....."

In The Garden :: A Fabulous Fall

We finally planted our garden! For the first time in a loooooong time, I have a vegetable garden at home. It has been so lovely using the community garden and we will continue to use it for HOT veggies like tomatoes and peppers, but I am so glad that I do not have to load up the kiddos and drive to plant or harvest veggies.
It has always been a dream to be able to go pick supper right before we eat it. What's for dinner? Let's go find out! I may be being a bit too hopeful here, but I am so grateful to have this little place, full of dirt. Full of hope.

So far we have planted:

  • Summer squash (trombolleto, ronde de nice, BI's big packet This mix includes Caserata, Cocozelle, Black Beauty, Round, Tatume, and Crookneck squash.)
  • Winter squash (acorn, butternut and delicata)
  • Pumpkins (french heirloom cinderella, jarradale)
  • Kale (dwarf blue, siberian, lacinato/dinosaur)
  • Swiss Chard
  • Rapini/Broccoli Rabe
  • Bok Choy
  • Kailaan/Chinese Kale
  • Leeks
  • Carrots (purple and carnival!!)
  • Beets (bull's blood, sweet baby, yellow and
  • Radishes (white icicle, watermelon!!!, sparkler)

You Watch Them Grow...Then You Let Them Go

This picture says it all.

phoro by Jen Glos

Watch Them Grow by Zach Gill
She's close to God, I'm sure of that
She sits him down, and they have a chat
She asks for sunshine, and he agrees
You see, for her, He'd do anything

You watch them grow, then you let 'em go
She is a monkey, and I'm her tree
And now she's climbing all over me
Swinging on my vines dancing on my limbs
Her monkey sounds sound like angel's hymns

You watch them grow, then you let 'em go
You watch them grow, then you let 'em go

She is an angel, she is an imp
She's got my big toe, and her mother's lips
She gives fishy kisses, and great big bear hugs
42 pounds of pure love
Then one day she'll be 17, feelin' too big for her home
Seems she was just only 3, oh how our children they grow

You watch them grow, then you let 'em go
You watch them grow, then you let 'em go
You watch them grow, then you let 'em go
You watch them grow, then you let 'em go

Then one day she'll be 33, maybe with a child of her own
Seems she was just 17, oh how our children they grow
He'll ask for sunshine, and she'll agree
You see for him, she'd do anything
He is her child, the center of her world
She is his mother... my little girl

You watch them grow, then you let 'em go
You watch them grow, then you let 'em go

My Little Fledgling

Yesterday was Gracie's first day of preschool (!!!) and it was probably one of the best days of our life. We are so fortunate to be attending an outdoor preschool that is led by an amazing women who is full of magic. A teenage alum once said that the program "helped her to see" and that is so true for us as well. Everything is turned into a song or story. A fir cone, a creek, a dead woodrat. It really is magical!

But first...we painted the bus lovingly named Ganesh.
So appropriate as Ganesh is the Remover of all Obstacles.

May the journey begin!
