Tomato LOVE

Our favorites this year:
Chocolate Cherry
Super Sweet 100
Sungold
Green Zebra
Early Girl
Blush (yellow with blush streaks)
Maglia Rosa (rose with coral streaks)

and of course...
Super Marzano
(which is amazing slow-roasted!!!)

We loved these varieties so much that we saved seeds to start our own seedlings this winter.
If the average last frost is Feb 11-20 then we should start them six weeks earlier
in the beginning of January.
I love California!

The goal for 2012:
Plant 8-10 plants at the community garden and 8-10 plants at home for an early and late crop.
**planting 2 san marzano and 2 early girl at each location**
But knowing our LOVE of tomatoes, we will be lucky to have so few planted.

Happy Family

The containers for Happy Baby food is the perfect size for freezing lemon, lime, or in this case Mexican Lime juice. Our neighbor has a tree loaded with fruit so we squeezed as many as we could. It reminds me of the sour orange in so many of my favorite yucatecan recipes (especially Pollo Pibil) and also our favorites from Brazil (especially the Caipirinha. When we were in Buzios, there were women selling local sweet limes along the dirt roads.) We have created something similar using limes and oranges before but the Mexican Lime seems to be the perfect substitute.

Hay!

We are enjoying the pure joys of Autumn around here and we made an amazing stew to suit the season for dinner tonight. It isn't great in photos though so I added this adorable photo of our hay rides instead.

While we were getting seeds and seedlings at Common Grounds, Gracie spotted the hay and wanted a bale "so we will be prepared when we have a farm someday!"

Autumn Stew:
you can put all ingredients in the crockpot in this order and cook on low all day, add kale last 20 min
or brown meat in large pot then add other ingredients, bring to boil, stir then cook on low +/-2 hours adding kale at the end as well

all cut into big chunks:
2 large sweet potatoes
8 carrots
2 sweet onions
red bell pepper
fennel bulb

top with:
2 lbs(?) stew meat (I get natural beef, grass fed, no antibiotics, etc. etc.) tossed in flour

combine:
28 oz diced tom
1 cup red wine
1 Tsp whole grain dijon mustard
1 tsp thyme
and pour over meat and veggies

6-8 hours later...
top with
4 cups chopped kale

You will be glad for the cool weather and the rain in the forecast.

A Perfect Weekend

Family, Friends, Festivals and a little Bluegrass thrown in. Yes, it definitely was a perfect weekend! Grace enjoyed the journey with our neighbor Fiona, as much as the destination. We discovered a new trail that leads us stright "downtown" while passing through redwoods groves, collecting treasures all along the way. If only we could remember to do that in everyday life. It is about the journey after all isn't it?!?
